2011 Hyundai Verna

Here is a first drive of the new Verna, a car we think is a quantum leap over the previous model. The latest Verna is the seventh generation one and is built on a completely new platform. The chassis is much stiffer than before and has been optimised for better crashworthiness to meet the increasingly stringent standards in Europe and the US.
The new Verna looks impressive and sports Hyundai’s new ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design which is a mix of sharply sculpted and flowing lines. The interior design isn’t as cutting edge as the exterior but the dashboard is nicely shaped with a subtle indent on the top. The switchgear feels good and the top-spec India model will get full electronic adjustment. But storage space in the cabin isn’t too generous.
The front seats are quite comfy and there’s fantastic legroom in the rear too. However, like with the previous Verna, the seat is too low and this compromises under-thigh support. Moreover, the corners of the rear seat are rounded off excessively which again leaves you with little thigh support. It’s because of this that the Verna’s rear seat, despite the generous legroom, isn’t as comfy as the Vento or City’s.
The Indian Verna will get two petrols and two diesels, none from the previous Verna. Instead, Hyundai has plonked its latest Gamma petrol and U2 diesel motors under the hood. The pair of petrol and diesels both come with 1.4 and 1.6-litre capacities. It’s the 1.6 diesel which pumps out 126bhp and 26.5kgm of torque which promises to be the cracker.
Hyundai’s new-generation Gamma petrol twin-cam, 16-valve motor comes with continuously variable valve timing and, as a result, power and torque outputs are pretty healthy. The 1.4 delivers 106.5bhp, which is very impressive for a small capacity motor, while the 1.6 Gamma dishes out 122bhp to make it the most powerful engine in its class.
We drove the 1.6 petrol with the auto ’box. Fire the engine and it idles pretty quietly. Snick the spindly gear lever into D, prod the throttle pedal and the Verna leaps forward quite eagerly. Engine response at low revs is pretty good. Pile on the revs though and the 1.6 Gamma’s engine eagerness fades quite quickly. The mid-range is adequate but at high revs, this motor struggles quite a bit and feels strained and thrashy.
The suspension hardly gets a workout when you’re driving on the long, smooth and arrow-straight roads in UAE. And there’s not much steering work to be done either. The Verna felt remarkably planted and the long wheelbase gave it a composure that promises to make it a good long-distance cruiser, however strong crosswinds can unsettle the car. Its true test though will be on Indian roads though. The steering is quite light but still had pretty good feel around the centre position but it doesn’t weight up consistently and at times feels disconnected from the road like many EPS units. However, that won’t bother typical owners who will be looking for an effortless steering and light controls for an easy commute.
The new Verna, miles ahead of its predecessor, blends practicality, quality and value in a package that is more upmarket and stylish than before and is good enough to disrupt the established order of the City and Vento.

Audi A8L launched

After the running success of its powerful A4 and A6 sedans here in India, Audi now launches the long wheelbase version of its globally recognized prestige sedan, the Audi A8L, which will be priced Rs. 89 lakh onwards (ex-showroom Delhi)

A treat to the senses packed with everything that the term luxury stands for, the launch of the new Audi A8L, is a telling sign of the growing demand for luxury sedans in the country.

Displacing a massive 4163cc, the 4.2 FSI V8 petrol engine, Audi’s elite A8L is capable of generating 372 horse power with a chassis twisting 445Nm of torque at just 3,500 rpm. Coming with an electronically controlled 8 speed tiptronic automated transmission and quattro permanent all wheel drive, the A8 is able to go from standstill to 100km/hr in just 5.8 seconds flat.

With everything present to pamper you in each and every way-be it the Bang & Olufsen sound system, the Multi Media Information system with a touchpad, the numerous buttons to control the exact temperature and level of airflow from the A/C vents in your direction-its all about the ultimate indulgence.

To ensure passenger safety, the new Audi A8L will be tucked in with the usual ABS, EBD, ESP and numerous airbags. Also part of the security arsenal is the Audi press sense basic safety system, which by using information from the ESP system can ‘understand’ a critical situation and help mitigate the situation by intervening.

The new Audi A8L will be priced Rs. 89 lakh onwards (ex-showroom Delhi), and will go on to give competition to the BMW 7 Series, which is an established player in the Indian Prestige Sedan segment.

A touch of class to the exterior package and a power packed armory on the inside makes the Audi A8L powerful and sporty, while retaining all of its super sedan characteristics.

Mercedes-Benz G-Wagon launched in India

Mercedes-Benz India brings in the G-Wagon at Rs. 1.1 Crore

Mercedes-Benz India has launched its premium and rugged off-roader G-Wagon in Mumbai for a whooping Rs. 1.1 crore (ex-showroom). The G-Wagon, which stands for Geländewagen which literally means ‘cross country vehicle’ in German, is the elitist off-roader in the Mercedes-Benz line-up. The India market will get the AMG tuned G55 model which is more performance-oriented than its stock-sibling, the G550. The AMG G55 is powered by 5.5 litre V8 petrol powerplant that pumps out 507 horses at 6,100rpm and an earth-churning 700Nm at 2,750rpm.

All that power is more than enough to propel the 2,500kg monster to 100km/h from standstill in just 5.5 seconds. The G-Class is regarded as one of the most able off-roader from the Mercedes-Benz portfolio and enjoys a long-standing heritage of over three decades. The design of the G-Wagon remains more or less untouched and still boasts of the German military lineage. But technologically the G-Wagon is fully up-to-date with modern day equipment like permanent all-wheel drive with three locking differentials, ESP and electronic traction control. This is the quintessential off-roader for those who are looking for the best in luxury as well as some serious off-roading. The G-Wagon will take you wherever you want to go and let you do that in style.

Honda Launches Face-lifted Accord

The 8th generation Accord has been a great looker since its introduction in May 2008. The sharp edges, long sleek body and rather muscular stance have definitely helped in the appeal department. Enhancing its looks, Honda has tweaked the car with a minor facelift.

The face lifted Honda Accord is now available in the market. The car boasts of a revised the front bumper, new front grille to offer a bolder chrome look, enhanced the rear with some chrome bezel around the taillights, indicators on the ORVMs and spiced up the package by offering a set of alloy wheels that feature an all new design. These changes are across both the 2.4 liter and V6 models. In addition to these changes, the 2.4 liter model also boasts of a sunroof and wooden like interior inserts as standard. These two features were earlier only available on the V6 Accord.

Speaking about the car, Mr. Takashi Nagai, President & CEO, Honda Siel Cars India Ltd., said "Honda Accord has been one of the most successful premium sedans in its category with over 25000 units sold since its launch in India setting new standards in exclusivity, comfort and safety. Our belief in constantly upgrading our products based on customer feedback prompted this launch of an upgraded version of the Accord with unique styling in combination with luxurious features."

The changes are all cosmetic and though they don't seem monumental, one must understand that the Accord was a formidable entry level luxury sedan in the first place.  With the new enhancements, the Accord just becomes a better package to own and the real winner is the customer who opts for the 2.4 liter version, for that is where you are getting more bang for your buck.

The 2.4L Accord comes with 5-speed Manual Transmission and 5-speed Automatic transmission with Paddle shifts. The 3.5L V6 engine features an advanced Variable Cylinder Management (VCM) system that switches between six-, four-, and three-cylinder combustion depending on the driving conditions and thereby delivering maximum power of 275 PS during six cylinder operation and impressive fuel economy in VCM mode while cruising.

Honda Accord Pricing:- ex-showroom, Delhi

Accord 2.4 MT – Rs.19.60 lac
Accord 2.4 AT – Rs.20.36 lac
Accord 3.5 V6 – Rs.26.41 lac
